Sony Brings Sustainable Innovation to BRAVIA TVs with SORPLAS
Transforming E-Waste into Next-Generation TV Components
Sony continues its push for sustainability with a breakthrough in Material-to-Material Recycling, a process that allows end-of-life TV plastics to be repurposed into new BRAVIA™ TVs without compromising quality.
This initiative brings a major shift in electronic waste management, ensuring that plastics recovered from old televisions find a second life in new TV models. Sony’s flame-retardant recycled plastic, SORPLAS™, plays a key role in making this transition possible.
The first implementation of this technology will be seen in the 65-inch 4K OLED BRAVIA 8 (2024 models), with global shipments beginning within 2025.
Recycling TV Plastics with Material-to-Material Technology
One of the biggest challenges in TV recycling is the variety of plastics found in rear covers. The structural differences make direct reuse difficult, requiring an advanced sorting and blending process.
Sony tackled this issue by working closely with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, the developer of SORPLAS™, to create a precise material sorting method that ensures consistency in texture, strength, and durability.
This new process allows recycled plastics from any manufacturer to be reintegrated into new BRAVIA TVs, while maintaining the same high quality as traditional SORPLAS™ materials.
A Step Toward Fully Circular Recycling
Sony’s ultimate goal is to close the loop on TV manufacturing, aiming for fully circular recycling. This means that each generation of TVs would be built using materials recovered from previous models, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
By incorporating SORPLAS™ into BRAVIA rear covers, Sony is laying the foundation for a future where no TV plastic goes to waste, reducing the environmental impact of electronic production.
Celebrating Earth Day with Sustainable Commitments
Sony’s announcement coincides with Earth Day on April 22, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable innovation and environmental stewardship.
Each year, Earth Day highlights the importance of resource conservation and responsible manufacturing. By launching Material-to-Material Recycling, Sony aligns its business with global sustainability goals, ensuring that its products contribute to a greener planet.
To further educate consumers and industry professionals, Sony will publish a detailed breakdown of its environmental initiatives on its website, showcasing the steps taken toward carbon reduction and e-waste management.
