LG continues to transform the TV experience with ThinQ
Many predicted the eventual demise of the TV as the Internet produced and made more content accessible, and users started consuming entertainment through their handheld tablets, laptops or smartphones. However, this collective thought quickly changed with the advent of the smart TV. Equipped with seamless user experience (UX) systems that allow easy access to the web, social media websites and streaming portals, the smart TV presented an even more valuable and dominant vehicle for entertainment, education, and information. In recent years, the smart TV has become the most widespread smart device in the home, as proven by a steady rise in global sales.
This year, smart TVs took the next step in providing an even more first-rate viewing experience with the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). Once only known as a plot device in sci-fi and future-oriented films, AI has become a widespread reality that’s infiltrating every part of society, reinventing industries and experiences for consumers and business customers in all sectors. Recent breakthroughs in this immersive new technology are helping electronics companies become even smarter about how it can appeal to the audience—and the implications are staggering. Transformed to the age of machine learning, the AI-powered smart TV can now recognize voices, access the web, and connect to other AI-equipped smart household gadgets.
LG Electronics is at the forefront of AI revolution, laying the groundwork for the televisions of tomorrow with its proprietary AI technology called ThinQ. Incorporated in LG’s newest OLED and Super UHD TVs, ThinQ combines LG’s webOS Smart TV operating platform with deep learning technology to create an AI capability that uses advanced voice assistant technology to control TV functions and search for content across a wide range of sources, including Netflix, YouTube and the Internet at large. With ThinQ, the remote control has become a more intuitive device—by pressing and holding down a button to activate a built-in microphone and speaking directly into it, users can turn off the TV, turn up the volume or change picture mode settings. Over 800 preset commands are available for LG’s AI-integrated TV, all of which can be accessed even without an Internet connection. When searching the web, these TVs don’t only work on fixed voice commands, but also “understand” the intent of the query before providing a search result.
The new smart LG OLED and Super UHD TVs also support Google Assistant, and also perform as smart home hubs—users will be able to control other LG smart home devices that can connect to the TV via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth—although these functions are not yet available in the Philippines.
The new crop of smarter, AI-fueled sets is proving that the TV still holds relevance in the age of handheld devices and that it continues on its role of delivering even more compelling and immersive viewing experiences, both for a collective audience and the individual. Over time and with continued use, the artificial intelligence in these TV sets will gradually adapt to user behavior to become more efficient and intuitive, sometimes giving us what we want even before we ask for it—just like a valuable personal assistant. And just like a personal assistant, AI-integrated TVs make our lives easier, more convenient and, in some ways, all the more enriched
