So, on a crisp March 22nd, I embarked on a media drive with BYD Philippines and other Members of the Motoring/Tech Media, taking the Dolphin for a spin from the bustling streets of Quezon Avenue all the way to the scenic coast of Subic Bay and back. Here’s my first impression of this electric marvel.
Spacious Comfort: A Cabin Designed for Relaxation
I was instantly struck by the Dolphin’s spaciousness as soon as I slid into the driver’s seat. The interior is cozy and lets in plenty of natural light to create a spacious and welcoming feel. For the lengthy drive ahead, the seats’ soft, breathable material provided excellent support and comfort. I can adjust the driver’s seat to the ideal position for maximum comfort while driving.
The minimalist dashboard design adds to the feeling of spaciousness. The centerpiece is the dominant 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment screen. This screen, with its crisp visuals and user-friendly interface, serves as the central hub for controlling various in-car functions.
However, my eyes were initially drawn to the steering wheel. It’s a stylish, multi-function wheel that provides convenient access to essential controls and audio settings. The overall impression of the cabin is one of sophistication and comfort, perfectly suited for both city commutes and leisurely road trips.
Tech Savvy: A Connected and Responsive Infotainment System
The aforementioned 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment screen is the heart and soul of the Dolphin’s technological prowess. It’s responsive, reacts quickly to touch commands, and boasts stunning visuals. The system integrates seamlessly with smartphones, allowing for effortless navigation, music streaming, and even phone calls. Notably, the voice control feature impressed me with its speed and accuracy. Whether adjusting climate control or searching for a destination, voice commands were executed flawlessly, keeping my focus on the road.
Complementing the central infotainment screen is a crisp and clear 5-inch LCD instrument panel. This secondary display provides essential driving information, such as speed, battery level, and remaining range, all within easy view. The combination of these two screens creates a seamless flow of information, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience.
Effortless Navigation: A Smooth and Quiet Highway Ride
As we transitioned from the city streets to the open highway, the true capabilities of the Dolphin’s electric powertrain became apparent. The single electric motor, generating 94 horsepower and 180 Nm of torque, propelled the car effortlessly. Acceleration was smooth and responsive, providing ample power for confident highway cruising.
But what truly impressed me was the silent hum of the electric drive. Gone were the usual engine noises associated with gasoline vehicles. In the Dolphin, only the gentle hum of the electric motor and the whisper of wind against the car broke the silence, creating a serene and calming driving experience. This quietness translates to a more relaxing journey, especially for longer distances.
One aspect to consider with electric vehicles is range anxiety. While the BYD Dolphin boasts an official range of 405 kilometers, a more realistic expectation, factoring in driving conditions and variations in driver behavior, would be around 360 kilometers. This still offers ample range for most daily commutes and even short weekend getaways. The regenerative braking which allows you to recover battery power and range. There are two modes, normal – which allows you to recover range normally and is very smooth and you can barely notice it. The next mode is large where you can feel the Dolphin slowing down considerably when you lift your foot of the accelerator. The power generation is still not one for one, but it is a welcome addition. However, for longer journeys, careful planning and the availability of charging stations along the route are necessary.

Returning from Subic, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of optimism about the future of electric mobility. The BYD Dolphin, with its stylish design, spacious interior, and impressive technological features, offers a compelling alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles.
